return to the mountains and Killarney for the cool of the evening.
Carl Sandburg, one of the United States most noted and cherished poets,
authors and biographers made his home at Connemera in nearby flat rock
NC. The house, built in 1838 by Christopher Memminger, who would
become Secretary of the Treasury for the Confederate States of America,
became Sandburg’s home in 1945. It is now operated by the National Park
Service as the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site.
Located Adjacent to the Carl Sandburg Home is Flat Rock Playhouse, “The
State Theatre of north Carolina”. The theatre offers a seven month season
of meticulously crafted productions which draw theatre goers from all over
the nation.
The Brevard Music Center, home of the Brevard Music Festival, offers more
than 80 public performances each summer. A short, scenic drive to Brevard
will put you in touch with an astounding musical treasury.
